The Footprints of the Invisible Man Walking on the Sand

Today, VIPA Wa Dee would like to invite everyone to discover a 20 minute short documentary titled The Footprints of the Invisible Man Walking on the Sand. It tells a story that reflects the unhealed wounds of the LGBTQ+ community in South Korea.

Footprints Without a Body

This short documentary introduces us to “Sakja,” a transgender club manager in her late sixties who has spent her entire life facing loss and isolation as an “outsider.” What makes the story even more poignant is how her life narrative is interwoven with images from the funeral of “Byun Hee soo,” a former transgender soldier who was discharged from the military simply because she chose to undergo gender affirming surgery — a decision that ultimately led her to end her own life. These stark realities cry out to us, showing that discrimination and injustice against the LGBTQ+ community are not distant issues. They continue to consume lives in every era.

A Mirror Reflecting Society 

What makes this documentary powerful is the way it reflects the realities of Korean society in every dimension — whether it is social hierarchy or the diminishing of human value simply because of difference.
