In a country where tradition serves as a wall barring women from the world, Zara Shahverdi chose to ride right through it. Cutting Through Rocks, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary, follows her journey as the first female council member in a rural Iranian village. Watch her challenge a deeply entrenched patriarchy and defy the age-old customs that have clipped the wings of women’s dreams for centuries.

Life or Tradition

The film lays bare the daily injustices women are forced to bear: an 11-year-old girl who is already a mother of two, a woman coerced into signing away her inheritance to her brother, and a court that dismisses a young girl seeking a divorce with a cold, 'That’s just how life is.' Masterfully presenting these flashpoints, the documentary illustrates how the moment a woman reclaims agency over her life and refuses to conform, the established patriarchy immediately perceives her strength as a threat.

The Price of Change

Zara wasn’t just a rebel; she made a real difference. She fought for women to co-own their homes with their husbands and taught young girls to ride motorcycles so they could feel free for the very first time. But what will make your blood boil is seeing the vicious resistance from a system trying to wipe out their identity. The court went so far as to order a sex change exam, all because she dared to live in a way a woman was never supposed to.

Ultimately, the greatest value of Cutting Through Rocks lies in its sheer honesty. It shuns the idealistic narratives of superhero films where every battle is won, acknowledging instead that transforming deep-seated power structures is a grueling, long-term journey. Nevertheless, the documentary successfully imparts strength and hope to young girls. It beautifully illustrates that while a massive wall may not fall in one day, simply daring to create a fracture within it is enough to alter the course of the future.
