A small classroom in the Favoriten District

The documentary Favoriten takes us to the Favoriten district of Vienna, following the lives of children from diverse homes, languages, and experiences. They shared a small classroom for three years. The portrayal of their joyful, warm, and painful moments makes the audience feel as if they are sitting in that very same classroom with them.

Community Born of Closeness

Ms. Ilkay serves as the center of this warmth. She teaches language, mathematics, and religious guidance while caring for the children with genuine gentleness. Scenes where the children struggle to define "culture" or dance with unbridled joy capture a simple, vibrant energy. Director Beckermann also allows the children to hold the cameras themselves at times, filming their friends and increasing the sense of intimacy and authenticity in the footage.

Behind the Radiance

Despite the warmth and joy, the underlying reality is heavy. Many families are refugees, bearing scars from war, poverty, and structural educational issues. Such as teacher shortages or the rigid tracking system of the school curriculum. These complexities are vividly conveyed through children’s lives without additional explanation.

Smiles that Invite Reflection

Favoriten is not merely a classroom documentary that brings a smile to your face. But it reflects the systemic flaws in education, the reality of refugee life, and the latent inequality within society. It evokes a desire in the audience to reach out and help. It is a film that is heart-warming yet thought-provoking, where smiles and tears coexist in the same story.
