Imagine if every breath you drew was filled with toxic dust, every drop of water you drank was laced with chemicals, and the sky that should be bright was instead a heavy shroud of brown smog. What would life be like? This is no scene from a sci-fi film. But it is the reality of “Delhi”, India’s capital. VIPA Recommend invites you to watch Invisible Demons, the documentary that plunges us into the heart of a city "gasping for air" amidst the pollution and climate crisis that erodes people’s lives every single day.
When the Air Becomes the Enemy
Director Rahul Jain captures life in Delhi through the eyes of ordinary people struggling against "toxic air." Temperatures soaring to 50 degrees Celsius, rivers choked with chemical foam, children playing beside mountains of trash that pierce the sky, housewives with eyes reddened by smoke, and cows chewing on plastic bags—every image is the truth. There is no CG or imagination here, but it is the evidence of a world slowly decaying.
The Sickness No One Wants to See
Invisible Demons does not take us to listen to academics or those in power. Instead, it chooses to look through the eyes of the poor, the farmers, and the homeless. The director admits he grew up with the privilege that he is protected from the heat by air conditioning. However, what he seeks to reflect is the lives of millions of others who have nothing but lungs slowly falling from toxic dust, and an environment deteriorating in front of them.
Images Hard to Forget
Invisible Demons is a documentary that makes us feel both indignant and hopeless at the same time. It is the voice of people screaming for air. But they only to be swallowed by toxic smoke. These images might make us want to look away, but finally, we cannot escape. Because the "demons" in this story... are not far away at all. They are the pollution that surrounds us—and they are in every breath we take.
