Today, VIPA What’s Good invites everyone to experience a way of life that may seem ordinary… yet is filled with deep meaning—the “Sarong Warriors,” a Muslim fishing community in Sakom Subdistrict, Chana District, striving to preserve simplicity and the beauty of nature from being lost to the arrival of the “gas pipeline project, gas separation plant, and related industries,” developments that could permanently change their sea, their homes, and their way of life.

“Development” should begin by listening to the voices of local communities.

The documentary takes us back to the year 2002, during the Thaksin government, a time when large-scale industrial projects were about to transform coastal areas. The change did not only reshape the landscape; it also shook the very foundations of the community—its social structure, religion, and once-peaceful way of life. The transformation was not limited to economic impacts; it challenged the “heart of the community,” forcing them to decide whether to accept the change or stand firm for what they believe in.

Uniting Through the Heart

“If I had a choice, I’d rather stay in the kitchen than go to a protest.”

— A simple yet powerful line from one of the Sarong Warriors that deeply resonates. No one wants to rise up and fight unless it is truly necessary. But when the sea is life itself, the “Hoi Siap Flats” become a space for collective strength. Villagers, academics, and community members come together with smiles and mutual understanding. The voices heard here are not voices of conflict, but voices of “love” for their land and sea.

A community diary you should see for yourself

Sarong Warrior is not just a documentary recording a social movement; it is a “record of life,” filled with faith, hope, and love, told through real people and real voices determined to protect their home so it can endure. The film also reveals another side of Muslim communities in the Deep South—beautiful, gentle, and driven by the power of the heart. Believe it: when the film ends, you will understand the meaning of the word “home” more deeply than ever before.
